  Surat – The Student Hub
 
Surat is mentioned in the Sanskrit epic, the Mahabharata when Lord Krishna stopped there en route from Mathura to Dwarka. According to other later Sanskrit records, the area was ruled by the Western Chalukyas in 610 CE, and continued to be ruled by Hindu kings until it was captured by one of the generals of Quabuddin Aibak.

Surat’s education facilities have led to Surat’s emergence as a prominent location for IT, ITES and manufacturing companies to expand. The Hinjewadi IT Park, IT Park in Nagar Road and Aundh are host to companies like Infosys, Wipro, KPIT, Tata Consultancy etc. Some of the major manufacturing activities in and around Surat include automobile, electronics, appliances, metal forging/casting etc. Surat has the largest metropolitan economy and the highest per capita income in the country.

Once the Capital of Maratha Empire, Surat is known for various cultural activities like Classical Music, Sports, Literature, Foreign language learning and Administrative, Economics, Social Science studies. These activities and job opportunities attract migrants and students from all over India, and also attract students from Middle East, Iran, Eastern Europe, South- East Asia etc which makes for a city of many communities and cultures. It is also a popular destination for the returning NRIs.
 
Transport:
 
Both public and private transport is popular in Surat. The local buses have extensive network, connecting all the major hubs like Lalgate, Ring Road, Station, Ghod dod Road, Chowk bazar. Two wheelers is the most commonly used mode of commuting amongst the Suratkars and Auto-rickshaws, prepaid taxis are all easily accessible.
 
Main Attractions:
 
The place located on the coast of the Arabian Sea basks in the hallowed memory of Mahatma Gandhi. Being the site of famous Salt Satyagraha it is one of the major tourist attractions in Surat. The movement initiated by Mahatma Gandhi from here, a landmark in India's struggle for Independence.

Hajira and Tithal:
 
These are beautiful beach resorts on the Arabian Sea. The azure water, tranquil surrounding, sandy beach fringed by the swaying casuarinas make for thes idyllic retreat
 
Gopipura:
 
The village lying close to Surat is named after the mythical Brahmin Gopi, who founded the city. The Agama Mandir and many other Jain temples are located within this village.
 
Old Fort:
 
Mohammed Tughlak originally built the fort in the 14th century to protect the city against the Bhils.
 
Winchester Museum:
 

This museum was named after Mr. Winchester, the Assistant Collector of that era, who took a keen interest in increasing the prosperity of Surat.

Other tourist attractions in Surat include: Dutch Cemetery, Bardoli, Makaipul, Ukai and Textile Market
